Nationals and Orioles Reach Agreement on Outstanding MASN Payments


The long-standing dispute between the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals over the value of the Nationals’ local television rights from 2012 to 2016 has finally been settled, according to three sources familiar with the matter. The Orioles have agreed to pay the Nationals nearly $100 million, which is the amount determined by Major League Baseball and New York State courts.

While the settlement does not fully resolve the ongoing dispute between the teams, as they still need to determine the rights fees for the period of 2017 to 2021, both MLB and the Nationals are optimistic that this agreement will make future fee determinations smoother.

Neither MASN nor the Nationals have commented on the settlement as of yet.

The Nationals’ television rights were initially controlled by the Orioles when the team moved into the Orioles’ television territory in 2005. A deal was brokered by MLB that gave the Orioles control of the Nationals’ TV rights indefinitely. However, the amount paid for these rights is renegotiated every five years, with an MLB-appointed committee determining the fees if an agreement cannot be reached.

In 2012, the Nationals disputed the fees set by MASN, which amounted to around $40 million per year. The team requested $475 million. An MLB revenue sharing committee determined that the Nationals were entitled to roughly $20 million more annually, or a total of nearly $100 million.
