Biden holds meeting with critics of tech companies regarding AI

President Biden held a meeting with a group of civil society leaders who have been critical of Big Tech companies to discuss the significant advancements of artificial intelligence (AI). This meeting reflects the U.S. government’s commitment to engage in conversations regarding AI technology and its potential risks.

Before the meeting in San Francisco, President Biden stated that he aims to understand the necessary regulations that can safeguard individuals from the negative impacts of new technologies. He acknowledged the harmful consequences of powerful technology without appropriate safeguards in place.

During the meeting, notable attendees included Tristan Harris, the executive director of the Center for Human Technology, who has actively criticized social media companies, Joy Buolamwini, the founder of the Algorithmic Justice League, known for her work on exposing biases in AI algorithms, and Jim Steyer, the CEO of Common Sense Media and a respected children’s advocate.

Major tech companies like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI are rapidly developing and deploying AI tools. They have been actively lobbying in Washington and other governments, proposing potential regulations while emphasizing the importance of continued technological advancements. Critics argue that these companies prioritize profit and seek to influence government controls for their own benefit.

The White House is dedicated to addressing the risks associated with the AI boom. In May, President Biden had a productive discussion with the CEOs of OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google. The government has also introduced an “AI Bill of Rights” outlining guidelines for federal agencies’ use of AI. Additionally, the National Science Foundation has allocated funding for AI research.

Both the House and the Senate have conducted hearings on AI, reflecting the focus on this technology in Congress. However, it remains uncertain if this increased attention will lead to new legislation.
