Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who is vying for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has expressed his belief that former President Donald Trump is aware of the legal trouble he faces over alleged mishandling of classified documents following his departure from the White House.
Being a vocal critic of Trump, Christie referred to the charges against the former President as a “horrible political and legal strategy” and argued that voters will not be convinced by his claims over time.
“The problem for Donald Trump in all of this is his own conduct. He’s his own worst enemy,” Christie stated. “None of this would have happened to him or the country if he had simply returned the documents.”
Christie made these remarks during an interview with “CBS Mornings” following Trump’s first interview since being indicted on 37 federal counts. As a former prosecutor, Christie pointed out that Trump seemingly admitted to obstruction of justice during the interview with Fox News anchor Bret Baier and suggested that Trump’s lawyers were likely displeased with his comments.
Despite Trump’s ongoing legal issues, many members of the Republican Party are hesitant to openly criticize him, with Christie claiming that “a lot of people” fear him and worry that negative comments could cost them voter support.
Christie, who recently announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination, asserted that he is not afraid of Trump because he has known him for 22 years and views him as nothing more than a “paper tiger.”
“I prioritize my country over any fear of him,” Christie affirmed.
To distinguish himself from Trump, Christie intends to focus on significant issues like inflation during his campaign.
When asked about his stance on the Supreme Court’s upcoming decision regarding race in college admissions, Christie emphasized the importance of considering all aspects of a person’s background.
“Everything should be taken into account, including the schools they have attended and their upbringing. Socioeconomic factors need to be considered because a dry transcript and an SAT score do not provide a comprehensive understanding of a person’s potential for success,” he explained.
Christie also redirected the conversation to the topic of school choice, advocating for a federal program that allows parents to choose the most suitable educational environment for their children.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re Black, White, or brown. If you’re economically disadvantaged and residing in a poor school district, your chances of receiving an excellent education diminish significantly,” Christie argued. “Parents should have the freedom to make that choice, rather than being constrained to underperforming schools in cities or rural areas.”
Despite his low poll numbers, Christie remains confident that “campaigns matter” and eagerly looks forward to engaging with voters.
“I’m not shy. I will present my case,” he concluded.
