Marine Scientist Recommends Simplicity for Increased Reliability of Submersibles

  • The Titan tourist submersible, which went missing on Sunday, was operated using a video game controller.
  • However, scientist Peter Girguis argues that submersibles should rely on robust and simple hardware.
  • Girguis points out that submersibles used by Japan, China, and France also prioritize simplicity in their components.

The Titan tourist submersible, which disappeared on Sunday, may have been operated with a video game controller, but according to scientist Peter Girguis, it is the simplicity of the devices that ensures the reliability of a submersible, as reported by Insider.

Girguis, a marine scientist from Harvard, states that submersibles have relied on simpler mechanical or electro-mechanical devices for several decades, including those used by Japan, China, and France. These countries strive to use simple components to control the vehicles and ensure personnel safety.

The Titan submersible, carrying five people including British billionaire and adventurer Hamish Harding, went missing during a dive mission to the Titanic shipwreck. The US Coast Guard is currently conducting search operations for the missing submersible.

CBS News reported in November that the Titan submersible was operated using a game controller, and off-the-shelf lights were used in the vessel. This segment became viral on Twitter, and people expressed their opinions about the equipment used in the submersible.

Girguis responded to Twitter user Marie’s comment about the submersible’s controls, emphasizing that, based on his 25 years of experience diving in submersibles, the vessel is better off with robust and uncomplicated hardware. He pointed out that many undersea vehicles use similar controllers because they are intuitive. However, what truly matters is the physical design, integrity, and control and safety systems of a submersible.
