ACLU complaint leads to halt of Massachusetts ‘DNA Drive’

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has raised objections, leading to the postponement of the public collection of DNA samples aimed at aiding law enforcement in solving crimes and identifying human remains. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan cited concerns raised by the ACLU and inclement weather as the reasons for postponing the “DNA Drive Day” event. The event, which was supposed to be the first of its kind in Massachusetts, would have allowed individuals to voluntarily submit their DNA samples to assist law enforcement in investigations. Previous use of DNA samples from genealogy databases has already proven effective in solving cold cases and finding missing persons.

District Attorney Marian Ryan expressed her office’s intention to collaborate with the local ACLU chapter to address their concerns, emphasizing the importance of ongoing conversations to best serve the community.

The outdoor event, originally planned to take place at Newton City Hall, offered participants the opportunity to provide DNA samples to FamilyTree DNA. These submissions would then be uploaded to the FamilyTree DNA and GEDmatch genealogy databases at no cost, potentially aiding investigators in their work.

Overall, the event’s postponement was due to the ACLU’s objections and adverse weather conditions. District Attorney Marian Ryan aims to resolve any concerns in collaboration with the ACLU, recognizing the significance of community dialogue.
