Julian Sands, a renowned actor who has appeared in films such as A Room With A View, Leaving Las Vegas, and Warlock, as well as TV shows like 24, Smallville, and Banshee, was reported missing on January 13 while hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains. His disappearance occurred in the Baldy Bowl area.
Due to the risk of avalanches, search efforts were suspended temporarily in March. However, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department resumed the search on Saturday, but unfortunately, Julian Sands could not be located despite the efforts of over 80 search and rescue volunteers, deputies, and staff. The search included the use of helicopters and drones to access remote areas of Mount Baldy.
In a statement, the Sheriff’s Department expressed that sections of the mountain are still inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions, including steep terrain and ravines covered in ice and snow. Their search efforts have totaled over 500 hours across eight specific searches for Julian Sands, as well as eight unrelated search and rescue operations in the Mount Baldy area.
The goal of the sheriff’s department is to bring closure to Julian Sands’ family, whose missing person case remains active. Limited search efforts will continue. Sands’ family has already expressed their admiration for the “heroic search teams” involved in the search.
