Woman Taken Into Custody After Leaving Correctional Reentry Program

A 25-year-old woman who allegedly absconded from a state correctional reentry program in Los Angeles has been apprehended and is now potentially facing charges for escape.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced that Aleisha Schmitz was arrested after walking away from the Los Angeles Community Reentry Program. She was taken into custody without incident on Saturday evening in North Hills.

According to state officials, Schmitz had walked away from the Custody to Community Transitional Reentry Program in Los Angeles County. The precise timeline of her disappearance from the program remains unclear.

Following her recapture, Schmitz was transported to the California Institution for Women. Her case will be referred to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for potential escape charges, as stated by the CDCR.

CDCR records indicate that Schmitz was sent to state prison from Los Angeles County on July 7, 2022. She received a three-year sentence for second-degree robbery and hit-and-run causing injury.

The reentry program offers eligible inmates the opportunity to serve their sentence within the community, rather than being confined to state prison. The program provides various services aimed at assisting with alcohol and drug recovery, employment, education, housing, family reunification, and social support.

According to the CDCR, since 1977, 99% of all incarcerated individuals who escaped from prisons, camps, or community-based programs have been apprehended.
