Juneteenth Celebrations at Leimert Park and El Segundo Festivals featuring Greek Theatre Concert

An extraordinary concert featuring Vice President Kamala Harris will be the highlight of the Juneteenth celebrations at the Greek Theatre. This event commemorates the emancipation of enslaved individuals in the United States. Titled “Juneteenth: A Global Celebration for Freedom,” the concert will showcase renowned artists such as Miguel, Charlie Wilson, Adam Blackstone, Kirk Franklin, Nelly, Jodeci, SWV, Davido, Chloe Bailey, Coi Leray, Muni Long, and Mike Phillips. Viewers can catch the televised performance on CNN and OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.

Leimert Park will host a vibrant Juneteenth festival from noon to 9 p.m. This inclusive event will encompass areas dedicated to celebrating family, music, and the liberation of the Black community. Attendees can enjoy three main stages, two DJ stages, and a spoken word stage.

Additionally, El Segundo’s Recreation Park will hold its second annual Juneteenth Festival from noon to 6 p.m. The event, presented by Black in Mayberry, aims to promote and highlight Black excellence in the arts while supporting Black-owned businesses. Attendees can immerse themselves in live music, arts and crafts, a kids zone, food trucks, contests, and giveaways.

Celebrations will also take place at the Ovation Hollywood shopping center on Hollywood Boulevard from noon to 4 p.m. Visitors can enjoy live music, interact with vendors, capture memories at a photo booth, participate in games, and access educational resources.

The fourth annual Juneteenth Drive-Thru Parade will commence at 1 p.m. near La Brea Avenue and Manchester Boulevard, concluding at Inglewood City Hall.

Juneteenth holds historical significance as it commemorates the day when Union Army Gen. Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. This order proclaimed the freedom of all slaves in Texas, as per the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862.

Recently, on June 17, 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday after President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Consequently, post offices will remain closed, and mail services will be unavailable. Furthermore, all federal offices, schools, and banks will observe the holiday and remain closed.

In his proclamation declaring Monday as the Juneteenth Day of Observance, President Biden stated, “As we observe Juneteenth, we remind ourselves of the sacred proposition rooted in Scripture and enshrined in our Declaration of Independence: that we are all created equal in the image of God and each of us deserves to be treated equally throughout our lives. That is the promise of America that every generation must strive to uphold.”
