On June 12, Alibaba’s billionaire founder, Jack Ma, conducted his first seminar at Tokyo College, a division of the University of Tokyo.
The two-hour seminar focused on “management philosophy and guiding the younger generation to achieve future success.” The content was drawn from Professor Ma’s extensive experience and revolutionary knowledge of entrepreneurship and innovation, as stated in Tokyo College’s official announcement on Friday.
In May, it was revealed that Ma would assume a visiting professorship at Tokyo College to teach sustainable agriculture and food production. According to his profile on the university’s website, he is expected to hold this position until the end of October.
In May 2019, Ma expressed his intention to return to teaching following his retirement from Alibaba in September of that year.
However, his relationship with the Chinese government deteriorated in 2020 after he criticized the country’s financial regulatory system. Since then, he has largely stayed out of the spotlight.
During that time, the Chinese authorities implemented new regulations that led to the suspension of Ma’s fintech company Ant Group’s anticipated $37 billion IPO. This caused Alibaba’s stock price to plummet and Ma’s wealth to decrease by nearly half, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index.
Since November of the previous year, Ma has been seen in Japan, Thailand, and Hong Kong. He was recently appointed as an honorary professor at the University of Hong Kong in April.
The teaching role at Tokyo College marks one of Ma’s first public engagements since his falling out with Chinese authorities in 2020.
On Saturday, Ma made an appearance at an Alibaba event, the finals of the Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition. This came shortly after the company’s president, Michael Evans, stated that Ma was “alive,” “happy,” and “creative,” according to a report from CNBC.
