The identity of a suspected drunk driver who was killed during a California Highway Patrol pursuit that resulted in a multi-car crash has been released by the coroner’s office. The deceased individual has been identified as Jesse Ramirez, a 33-year-old resident of Los Angeles.
The incident was reported at 12:06 a.m. on Sunday, with the CHP receiving information about a potential DUI driver on the northbound Arroyo Seco Parkway near Fair Oaks Avenue in South Pasadena.
The collision took place at 12:38 a.m. just south of Glenarm Street, which marks the end of the freeway.
According to the CHP, Ramirez was traveling northbound on the Arroyo Seco Parkway without any headlights on and was unable to maintain his lane. When officers attempted to stop his 2012 Kia Rio, he rapidly accelerated and crashed into two vehicles that were stopped at a red light.
The CHP noted that Ramirez was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
The driver of a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta sustained moderate injuries, while his female passenger suffered major injuries, as reported by the CHP.
The driver and male passenger of a 2012 Toyota Camry both suffered moderate injuries as well. Paramedics transported all injured individuals to nearby hospitals.
Although investigations are still ongoing, the CHP suspects that alcohol or drugs played a role in this collision.
