Council District 6 Special Runoff Election: Early Voting to Commence

Starting this Saturday, early voting for the June 27 special election runoff in the Sixth City Council District, to fill Nury Martinez’s vacant seat, will commence, according to Los Angeles city officials.

In the April 4 special election, Imelda Padilla, a community relations manager, and Marisa Alcaraz, a City Council aide, emerged as the top two candidates out of the seven-candidate field. As neither candidate achieved a majority, a runoff between the two highest vote-getters was necessary.

Padilla secured 3,424 votes, or 25.7%, while Alcaraz received 2,821 votes, or 21.1%.

A total of 13,510 ballots were cast in the April 4 election, representing 11.4% of eligible voters in the district.

In late May, all registered voters in the Sixth District were provided with a vote-by-mail ballot, as stated by Los Angeles City Clerk Holly Wolcott.

Wolcott reminded voters that there are multiple options available for casting their ballots, including at select vote centers in the Sixth District, which are set to open on Saturday with a ballot drop-box, or by mail.

Residents of the Sixth District can find a vote center or ballot drop-box location at clerk.lacity.gov/clerk-divisions/elections.

Even if eligible residents in the Sixth District missed the registration deadline, they can still vote at any vote center. Conditional voter registration under California election law allows prospective voters to register and cast a ballot.

Voters can utilize “Where’s My Ballot,” a free subscription that provides automatic notifications by text, email, or voicemail regarding the status of their ballot.

The Sixth District encompasses Van Nuys, Arleta, Lake Balboa, Panorama City, Sun Valley, and the eastern portions of North Hills and North Hollywood.

Martinez previously represented the district until her resignation in October, following her racist comments in a leaked recording of a meeting. After her resignation, the Sixth District has been under the supervision of Sharon Tso, the city’s chief legislative analyst, as a non-voting caretaker. A caretaker does not hold a seat on the Council but oversees the Council office to ensure constituent services and other essential functions.

The winner of the June 27 runoff will serve the remainder of Martinez’s term, which concludes in December 2024.
