Britt Eckland reminisces: From Bond Girls to Bond Women – A Shift in the Film Franchise’s Dynamics

Swedish actress Britt Ekland, known for her role as Mary Goodnight in the 1974 James Bond film “The Man With The Golden Gun,” recently shared her thoughts on the shift in portrayal of Bond girls in today’s world of political correctness. According to Ekland, the term “Bond girls” has been replaced by “Bond women” due to the influence of political correctness and the #MeToo movement. While she believes that the modern Bond women have a better position from a political correctness standpoint, Ekland feels that their portrayal may not be as enjoyable as it was during her time. She believes that the emphasis on political correctness has limited the fun and spontaneity that characterized the Bond films of the past.

Reflecting on her own experience filming “The Man With The Golden Gun,” Ekland discussed the challenges they faced during production, such as the lack of facilities and regulations that are common in the industry today. She also mentioned the absence of an intimacy coach, a role that has become more prevalent today while filming scenes of a sexual nature. Despite these challenges, Ekland acknowledged that there has been some change in Hollywood following the #MeToo movement, but not to a significant extent.

Ekland fondly reminisced about her time on set with her co-stars, including Maud Adams, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, and Roger Moore. She praised Moore as a genuine and personable individual, and shared anecdotes about the camaraderie among the cast and crew. Additionally, Ekland discussed her struggle with body image and the pressure to maintain a certain appearance while filming in a bikini.

When it comes to watching her own films, Ekland admitted that she has always been too shy and self-conscious to view them. The thought of seeing herself on a big screen triggers feelings of fear and embarrassment, as she is a perfectionist and tends to be overly critical of her own performance.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of “The Wicker Man,” the film will be re-released in theaters on June 21st.
