Boris Johnson Steps Down as MP Amid Partygate Report

In a surprising move, Mr Johnson has announced his resignation and the triggering of an immediate by-election. Expressing his disappointment, he stated, “It is unfortunate to be leaving parliament, at least for now. What appalls me even more is the undemocratic manner in which I am being forced out by a committee chaired and managed by Harriet Harman, with such evident bias.”

Asserting his innocence regarding the partygate scandal, Mr Johnson declared, “I did not lie, and deep down, the committee knows it. However, they have deliberately chosen to disregard the truth because their objective from the very beginning was not to uncover it or genuinely understand my intentions when I spoke in the Commons.”

Refuting the allegations against him, Mr Johnson emphasized, “I have received a letter from the Privileges Committee that astonishingly confirms their determination to use the proceedings against me as a means to drive me out of parliament. They have failed to provide any evidence that I knowingly or recklessly misled the Commons.”

He continued, “They are well aware that when I addressed the Commons, I sincerely believed I was speaking the truth and was briefed accordingly, just like any other minister. They know that I promptly corrected the record, and they know that myself and other senior officials and ministers, including the current Prime Minister and Rishi Sunak, conducted our work lawfully.”

Expressing his dismay at being forced out of parliament by a small group of individuals, Mr Johnson remarked, “No evidence supports their claims, and even Conservative Party members, let alone the wider electorate, have not approved their actions. This sets a dangerous and unsettling precedent.”

‘After 13 years of Conservative chaos, enough is enough’

In response to the resignation, Angela Rayner, Labour’s deputy leader and shadow chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster, stated, “The British public is tired of this never-ending Tory drama unfolding at their expense. After enduring 13 years of Conservative chaos, it’s time for a fresh start for Britain, with a Labour government prioritizing the people’s concerns, such as addressing the cost of living crisis and building a better future.”

The report on whether Mr Johnson misled MPs regarding partygate will be published next week, with its release date moved forward after his announcement. A spokesperson for the privileges committee confirmed, “The Committee has consistently followed the procedures and the mandate of the House and will continue to do so. Mr Johnson has deviated from the processes of the House and has disparaged the integrity of the House with his statement. The Committee will convene on Monday to conclude the inquiry and promptly publish its report.”
