Opinion | Remarkable events during Mass

The June 14 Politics & the Nation article titled “Was it a Communion miracle? Conn. parish investigates.” delved into the investigation of a potential miraculous event involving the multiplication of Communion hosts in a church in Connecticut. This intriguing topic reminded me of my personal encounter with the concept of miracles, albeit a rather disappointing one.

When I was a young boy in a Catholic family, I was suddenly informed by my parents that I would be becoming an altar boy. At that time, I had already developed my own understanding of God and the Catholic Mass. In my ten-year-old mind, I believed that the Mass rituals genuinely entailed a miracle. I was convinced that the golden chalice held aloft by the priest began empty and somehow became filled with the hosts as he lowered it. To me, this explained why adults in the church conducted themselves with such solemnity and reverence. I held onto this notion until one morning when I observed the priest casually pouring ordinary wafers from a box into the golden receptacle, which he then placed behind the mysterious little door at the center of the altar.

That moment shattered my young mind’s belief in the miraculous nature of the Mass. Since then, I have maintained this perspective, for better or worse, to this very day.

In response to the June 14 article regarding the alleged miracle at a Catholic parish in Thomaston, Conn., it was stated that “Catholicism… teaches that Jesus was God in human form.” The phrasing of this statement implied that Jesus was not truly human, a viewpoint promoted by early heretics and condemned by various ecumenical councils during the early years of the church. In reality, the Catholic Church teaches that Jesus is both fully God and fully man, a single person with two natures – divine and human (Catechism of the Catholic Church, Questions 464-469). This profound mystery, which surpasses human comprehension, lies at the heart of the Catholic faith.
