Haley Lu Richardson Supports ‘White Lotus’ Character Amid Fan Criticism

  • Haley Lu Richardson made an appearance on Variety’s “Just for Variety” podcast.
  • Richardson addressed the criticism from “White Lotus” fans who perceived her character as the true villain of season two.
  • She also discussed how she personally took criticism against her character.

Haley Lu Richardson came to the defense of her character, Portia, in “White Lotus,” stating that fans who viewed her as the true villain of the show should seek therapy.

Richardson expressed her thoughts on the backlash towards Portia during an episode of Variety’s “Just for Variety” podcast. She portrayed the character in season two of “White Lotus,” which aired in October 2022. The show has garnered multiple Emmy Awards since its debut in July 2021.

“I find it unfair and distorted when people claim she was terrible or the real villain of the season,” said Richardson, emphasizing that Portia is not as morally reprehensible as other characters.

“It’s impossible to look at that young woman and say, ‘She is the worst character on this show.’ Those who think that should consider therapy,” she added.

During the same interview, Richardson acknowledged that she was not accustomed to fame when season two aired, and initially, she was upset by the online criticism towards her character. However, she eventually learned to separate herself from the criticism that was meant for Portia.

“I had never been in that situation before, so it did make me feel sad,” Richardson admitted. “During the first few episodes, I would see some things and reactions towards Portia and myself that I took personally or didn’t fully understand how to handle or process.”

Richardson revealed that she eventually embraced the diverse opinions people had about her character.

While details about season three are scarce, sources close to the production informed Variety in March that filming will take place in Thailand. Previous seasons were filmed at Four Seasons resorts in Hawaii and Italy, so it is likely that season three will be set in one of the country’s four properties.

Showrunner Mike White shared in a post-season two finale clip called “Unpacking S2 E7” that he envisions season three taking place in Asia and exploring themes of death, Eastern religion, and spirituality.

“The first season focused on money, and the second season delved into sex,” White explained. “For the third season, I envision a satirical and humorous exploration of death, Eastern religion, and spirituality. It presents an opportunity to create another captivating chapter in the world of White Lotus.”
