Mexico-US Soccer Match Halts Homophobic Chants

The soccer match between Mexico and the US Men’s National Team was twice interrupted by the referee due to homophobic chants from the crowd. Referee Ivan Barton made the decision to end the game at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas during injury time, as reported by ESPN. The anti-gay chanting persisted when US goalkeeper Matt Turner took a goal kick. Following the match, the soccer confederation for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, known as Concacaf, released a statement strongly condemning the discriminatory chanting by some fans. Concacaf stated that the referee had the discretion to end the match.

The chanting prompted the activation of the anti-discrimination protocol, according to the confederation. CNN reported that several fans were ejected from the stadium. Concacaf expressed disappointment and stated that these incidents tarnished what was meant to be a positive occasion to showcase high-quality football in the region. Concacaf, along with Mexico’s soccer federation, has been actively working to eliminate homophobic slurs from games for several years, as mentioned by The New York Times. Mexico, having previously sought assistance from star players to address the issue, has been fined for this offense on more than one occasion. “I want to make it very clear,” interim US coach BJ Callaghan said after the game, “it has no place in the game.” (Read more gay slurs stories.)
