Global Outages Reported across Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger

Facebook owner Meta experienced a widespread outage of its social media sites today, affecting users worldwide. The outage, which began around 14:30 ET, led to thousands of reports of problems on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. While the scope of the outages varied by country, users in New York, Los Angeles, and even Wichita, Kansas, faced significant difficulties. DownDetector, a website that monitors such outages, recorded tens of thousands of reports from users across the US alone. Internationally, users from countries like Mexico, Colombia, Germany, and the UK also reported issues with WhatsApp. Some users were unable to send or receive messages, while others couldn’t access the apps at all. Twitter became a hub for users to report the outage and express their frustrations.

Meta’s parent company has not disclosed the cause of the outage, but it seems to have been resolved as of 20:00 GMT (17:00 ET) Friday. However, one user highlighted that their Facebook photo galleries seemed to have disappeared, potentially leading to the loss of precious memories. This incident follows a similar outage experienced by Facebook Messenger four months ago. Overall, the outage affected a significant number of social media users and caused inconvenience and frustration.
