Potential Health Risks Associated with Germany’s Return of Sacred Kogi Masks to Colombia

Germany has returned two ancient wooden masks to Colombia’s indigenous Kogi community after more than a century in German museums. However, the masks, dating back to the 15th century, were treated with toxic pesticides during their time in Germany, posing a health risk during ceremonial use. The return was hailed as part of a reconsideration of Germany’s colonial past, with European museums increasingly facing restitution claims for objects acquired during the colonial era. While the masks were legally bought in 1915, their sacred status meant they should never have been sold, according to Berlin’s Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.
