May Sees Slight Increase in County’s Unemployment Rate

Riverside County’s unemployment rate experienced a slight increase last month, despite some positive developments in the regional economy, as per the latest figures released by the California Employment Development Department on Friday.

Based on preliminary estimates from the EDD, the countywide jobless rate in May was 4.4%, up from 4.2% in April.

Comparing it to the previous year, the May rate was a whole percentage point higher than the unemployment rate of 3.4% in the county.

The EDD reported that approximately 50,200 county residents were unemployed in May, while 1,091,600 were employed.

Among the various cities in the county, Mecca had the highest unemployment rate at 10.8%, followed by Coachella at 8.5%, Cherry Valley at 8%, Hemet at 6.4%, and Rancho Mirage at 6.2%.

Furthermore, the combined unemployment rate for Riverside and San Bernardino counties, known as the Inland Empire, rose to 4.4% in May from 4.1% in April.

An analysis of bi-county data revealed that the construction sector witnessed the most significant increase in payrolls, adding 3,400 positions.

The agricultural, financial services, hospitality, government, professional business services, and transportation sectors also experienced job growth, collectively contributing 5,000 jobs.

Additionally, miscellaneous unclassified industries created another 800 positions.

On the other hand, the manufacturing sector observed a decline in payrolls, resulting in a loss of 400 jobs.

The information technology, health services, and mining sectors remained stable during this period.

Statewide data indicated that the non-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for California in May was 4.5%.
