College student Sophia Celentano embarks on a unique journey every Wednesday for her summer internship. While her gig starts at a traditional 9-to-5, she chooses to be a “super commuter” by flying 600 miles one way from her home in Charleston, South Carolina, to her workplace in New Jersey for the one-day-a-week assignment. Her internship at Ogilvy Health in Parsippany made her realize the exorbitant costs of living in or around New York City for the summer.
Celentano meticulously calculated that living close to her worksite until the internship ends in August would cost her at least $4,250 for rent, food, gas, and other expenses. However, her commute from Charleston only amounts to $225 per week. This includes the roundtrip ticket from Charleston to Newark Liberty International Airport on Spirit, along with Uber costs and food, according to CNBC. By choosing this unconventional commute, she manages to save around $2,000 during the 10-week internship program. In a LinkedIn post about her decision, Celentano adds, “Plus, my untraditional commute provides me with more lifestyle freedom, and I genuinely look forward to my weekly adventures.” Nonetheless, her routine is still quite challenging.
Celentano’s Wednesday routine starts with waking up about three hours before her 6am flight. She catches a 9pm return flight to Charleston, arriving home around 11pm. Fortunately, she works remotely on Thursdays, allowing her to sleep in a little later in the morning. It’s worth noting that Celentano is not alone in her extreme commute. Others in her internship also travel to the Jersey office from cities like Boston, Philly, and even Atlanta. Celentano’s TikTok posts about taking a plane to work have gone viral, with one video amassing close to 700,000 views as of Friday.
