Fullerton Suspect Charged with Carjacking and Police Pursuit

An individual, aged 33, from Fresno, made his initial appearance in federal court on Thursday, facing charges related to a carjacking incident that resulted in a police pursuit in Fullerton.

The suspect, Deshawn Ricks, was apprehended on Wednesday based on a federal criminal complaint.

According to Fullerton police, officers were dispatched to the carjacking incident just prior to 2:40 p.m. on Wednesday at 122 E. Wilshire Ave., a parking structure.

The victim informed the police that while she was seated in her car, the defendant opened the door and commanded her to exit. When she refused, he allegedly used what she believed to be a “shank” pressed against her back to once again threaten her with harm if she did not comply, according to the police. The suspect forcefully dragged the victim out of the vehicle by grabbing her body and hair.

Before fleeing, the victim managed to retrieve her purse from the car and subsequently sought assistance, as per the police’s account.

Allegedly, Ricks proceeded to drive the stolen 2022 Mazda CX5 towards the victim, who had to quickly evade by jumping out of the way before he sped off, according to the police.

At 2:49 p.m., police located the stolen vehicle and attempted to halt the suspect, who refused to comply, initiating a pursuit, according to the police’s statement. Throughout the chase, the suspect engaged in hazardous driving behaviors such as driving against traffic, excessive speeding, disregarding red lights, and even colliding with a marked police vehicle.

Eventually, Ricks lost control of the vehicle, which was immobilized by a squad car, bringing the pursuit to an end. The suspect made an attempt to flee on foot, but he was promptly apprehended by officers. Authorities discovered a metal stake-like object measuring approximately one foot in length inside the stolen vehicle.

According to the police, Ricks has a criminal record that includes prior arrests for burglary, domestic violence, false imprisonment, pimping, threats, and possession of drugs with the intent to sell. Additionally, he had an active warrant for failing to appear in Fresno County for an arraignment scheduled in April, concerning charges of making threats with the intent to terrorize and brandishing a deadly weapon.
