The Glasnevin House: A Baker’s Kitchen-turned-Clock Museum

A stunning Glasnevin home, named ‘Maura’, with a rich history and unique features is now on the market with an asking price of €1.195m. This five-bed semi, built in 1931, was not always a family home. From 2015 to 2017, it served as a temporary storage space for an incredible collection of rare and exquisite timepieces from all over the world.

The owner, David Boles, a pharmacist and passionate collector of clocks and watches, needed a place to house his remarkable collection. Many of these timepieces are considered among the finest in the world. Boles, who inherited his love for horology from his father, Alexander Christopher Boles, generously donated his entire collection to the Irish Museum of Time in Waterford, where they are now displayed for public enjoyment.

No92 Iona Road, where the collection was housed, holds its own historical significance. It was the last house built on the road and is attached to number 90, which was once owned by Emmet Dalton, a close associate of Michael Collins. In 2017, the property was sold to Áine and Tim Lenihan, who made some renovations before moving in with their young children.

Áine Lenihan had always admired Iona Road and was drawn to the spaciousness of No92. The highlight for her was the large kitchen/dining/living room at the back of the house, which became her sanctuary during the pandemic. Lenihan took up baking and found great joy in using the well-equipped kitchen, complete with in-frame, hand-painted units, a double Belfast sink, and a long island. The traditional atmosphere is further enhanced by the Farrow and Ball paint colors, quartz countertops, and splash-back, and the presence of an old cast-iron stove.

The entrance hallway, with its original stained glass features, leads to the front rooms with high ceilings, coving, and original hardwood floors. These rooms exude a period charm, with chandeliers, picture rails, and Art-deco fireplaces. The color scheme throughout the house is carefully chosen to complement the exterior of The Church of St Columba, which can be admired from the front room’s bay windows.

The property also boasts a south-facing back garden, ensuring sunlight throughout the day. It offers a peaceful, countryside-like atmosphere, despite being just a 20-minute walk from O’Connell Street. Additionally, the house has rear access to a long lane, providing the opportunity for extra gardening space.

Although the Lenihans have cherished their time in No92, they are now reluctantly selling to move southside to fulfill family obligations. Their emotional attachment to the house is evident as they describe it as “truly beautiful” and doubt they will find anything quite like it again.

Frank Fleming, the estate agent, is currently seeking €1.195m for this exceptional property.
