Westchester D.A. declares closure of criminal investigation into Trump golf course

The criminal investigation into the valuations of a golf club in Westchester County, New York, owned by the Trump Organization has concluded after two years, according to Miriam Rocah, the county’s district attorney. Speaking at a press conference, Rocah emphasized the importance of independent prosecutors and a justice system that operates free from political influence. The investigation’s closure was initially reported by Insider.

In response to the news, former President Donald Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, expressing his relief at the investigation’s closure and questioning when his reputation will be restored. Prosecutors in Westchester County had been examining the Trump National Golf Club Westchester’s attempts to reduce its local tax burden by subpoenaing records from the town of Ossining. The club had long contested the town’s property valuation, claiming it was significantly lower than what was determined by the town. Eventually, a compromise was reached in which the town refunded the club and reduced the property assessment.

The investigation had been led by Elliott Jacobson, a former assistant U.S. Attorney, who served as the special prosecutor. However, it’s worth noting that the club was also involved in a separate lawsuit in 2022, where the New York Attorney General’s office accused Trump of inflating the golf club’s value and other property valuations to overstate his net worth. The trial for this case is scheduled for October.

The closure of the investigation represents a rare legal victory for Trump, who has faced numerous legal challenges in recent months. These include a $250 million lawsuit filed by the New York Attorney General’s office, two Trump Organization companies found guilty of 17 felony counts of tax evasion, 34 state felony counts related to falsification of business records, and being held liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges and has accused various prosecutors of targeting him for political reasons. District Attorney Rocah emphasized that the decision to close the investigation was made independent of politics and personal beliefs.
