Filipinas aspire to leverage Fifa World Cup participation to foster football’s growth

A local broadcast partner can play a crucial role in elevating the status of Filipinas’ football games against top international players. This partnership would not only increase the sport’s relevance in the country but also provide a platform for the Filipinas to be seen by a wider audience. Despite their hopes, securing a television deal in the Philippines remains uncertain. The Filipinas, however, believe that their participation in the Fifa Women’s World Cup will go beyond mere recognition and generate awareness for women’s soccer both locally and globally.

Sarina Bolden, a member of the Filipinas team, expressed her thoughts on the impact of their participation in an interview on Fifa’s official website. She believes that being part of the World Cup will bring significant awareness to women’s soccer and hopes that it will inspire people of all ages, especially young kids, to engage more with the sport.

Unfortunately, local broadcasters have been hesitant to pay the broadcast rights for the World Cup, making it unlikely for the Filipinas’ historic appearance in one of the biggest sporting events to be aired on local TV. This predicament is due, in part, to Fifa’s desire for a separate broadcast deal for the women’s tournament compared to bundling it with the more prominent men’s edition, as was done in previous editions. Japan also faces similar difficulties in securing broadcast rights despite their team’s reputation as one of the tournament favorites.

Fortunately, a potential blackout of the Women’s World Cup in some European countries was avoided after an agreement was reached between Fifa and the European Broadcasting Union. A last-minute deal in the Philippines would be a relief for local football fans who are eager to witness the Filipinas’ performance against the world’s best. Otherwise, they would have to rely on Fifa’s streaming service, potentially incurring extra costs for mobile data, or turn to illegal sites plagued with pop-ups.

Bolden acknowledges that many people in the Philippines are still unaware of the existence of the Philippine women’s national soccer team. However, she believes that the World Cup will bring significant awareness and hopes that it will encourage more people, particularly the youth, to engage with soccer. To achieve this goal, a local broadcast partner would be instrumental.
