The Neglected Issue: Overlooking Breast Injuries in Sports

If left untreated, traumatic incidents to the breast have the potential to develop into a condition called necrosis. This occurs when the fatty tissue, affected by bruising and swelling, loses its blood supply and dies, resulting in the formation of a hard lump. While fat necrosis does not increase the risk of breast cancer, it can closely resemble the disease during clinical examinations.

To prevent misinterpretation of trauma as breast cancer, it is crucial for women to report any injuries they experience so that appropriate medical follow-up can take place. This ensures that the affected tissue returns to its normal state and prevents any potential future confusion.

While research in this area remains limited, breast protection solutions already exist. Boob Armour, developed by Australian entrepreneur Suzie Betts, offers inserts made from polyethylene that are only 2mm thick. These inserts can be placed into a sports bra, providing an additional layer of safeguarding. Betts compares Boob Armour to mouthguards in modern sports or the protective gear worn in cricket.

Betts’ interest in breast injuries was sparked by her own experience of discovering non-cancerous lumps in her breast. This led her to consult with a breast cancer surgeon who asked about any previous trauma to the breast. This question inspired Betts to investigate further, and she discovered that her daughters, who play contact sports, had also experienced such injuries. Determined to address this issue, Betts wanted to empower women to participate in sports without the fear of breast injuries.

Currently, around 3,000 women wear Boob Armour, including athlete Anderson, who attests to feeling confident and unaffected during tackles or contact situations. This innovative solution allows women to fully focus on their performance and play their best game.
