Surge in Prime-Time Cable News Viewership Follows Trump’s Indictment

The latest weekly ratings reveal a significant increase in combined viewership for MSNBC, Fox News Channel, and CNN. This surge in viewership can be attributed to the indictment of former President Donald Trump in connection with his handling of classified records. MSNBC emerged as the winner, breaking Fox News Channel’s 120-week streak of first-place prime-time finishes among cable news networks. It garnered an average of 1.489 million viewers, surpassing all other cable networks between June 5 and Sunday.

This remarkable achievement marked a 53.5% increase in MSNBC’s viewership from the previous week when it ranked third among cable networks. Furthermore, MSNBC claimed the top four most-watched prime-time cable programs, with special mention of the Thursday edition of its political talk show, “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell,” which attracted 2.608 million viewers on the night of Trump’s indictment announcement.

Fox News Channel secured second place among cable networks for the second consecutive week, averaging 1.484 million viewers. This was a 10.9% increase from its previous week’s average of 1.338 million viewers. CNN, on the other hand, climbed seven spots to seventh place among cable networks, with an average of 672,000 viewers, signifying a significant 32.5% increase from its previous week’s average of 507,000 viewers.

Notably, ESPN also earned a place among cable networks with over 1 million viewers, averaging 1.023 million. The top 20 cable prime-time programs comprised notable political talk shows, such as “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell,” “Alex Wagner Tonight,” and “All In with Chris Hayes” from MSNBC, along with other compelling shows like “The Rachel Maddow Show” and Bravo’s “Vanderpump Rules.” ESPN’s coverage of the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees game, as well as the Women’s College World Series championship, also garnered substantial viewership. Additionally, History’s UFO investigation series, “The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch,” attracted attention.

In contrast, ABC’s coverage of Games 3 and 4 of the NBA Finals experienced a decline in viewership compared to the previous year. The Denver Nuggets’ victory over the Miami Heat in Game 3 drew 11.237 million viewers, whereas the Boston Celtics’ victory over the Golden State Warriors in Game 3 the previous year garnered 11.523 million viewers. Similarly, Denver’s victory over Miami in Game 4 attracted 10.416 million viewers, falling short of the 12.063-million average for Golden State’s victory in Game 4 of the previous year’s finals.

Overall, viewership for various forms of programming has experienced a decline, largely due to the availability of streaming options. However, NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” maintained its position as the most-watched non-sports program for the second consecutive week. Similarly, CBS’ coverage of the Tony Awards garnered significant viewership, although slightly lower than the previous year. The live streaming average audience on Paramount+ experienced a 13% increase from the previous year and set a record for a Tony Awards ceremony.

Among the five major English-language broadcast networks, the premiere of the Fox alternative series “Stars on Mars” captured viewers’ attention, securing fourth place in its time slot and placing 63rd for the week. The NBA Finals helped ABC retain its position as the most-watched network for the second consecutive week, while CBS maintained its second-place position.

The CW attracted an average of 320,000 viewers, with its most-watched program, “Superman & Lois,” continuing to garner attention. Netflix’s most-watched title was “Manifest,” with viewers dedicating 78.15 million hours to watching the supernatural drama’s fourth and final season. The comedy-drama “Never Have I Ever” also garnered significant viewership, along with the Danish drama “A Beautiful Life,” which topped Netflix’s most-watched movies.

Among Spanish-language programs, the Univision telenovela “El Amor Invencible” maintained its position as the most-watched for the second week in a row. Univision remained the most-watched Spanish-language network, followed by Telemundo, UniMas, and Estrella TV.

In the news category, ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” continued to dominate, while NBC’s “Nightly News with Lester Holt” and CBS’ “Evening News with Norah O’Donnell” followed closely behind.

The top 10 prime-time programs consisted of NBA Finals coverage, “America’s Got Talent,” “60 Minutes,” pregame shows, the Tony Awards, and reruns of popular shows. Netflix’s “Manifest” and “Never Have I Ever” claimed the top spots for streaming content, while the Univision telenovela dominated Spanish-language programming.
