Kennedy Swedick: Times Union’s Athlete of the Week for Girls

Albany Academy for Girls’ star golfer, Kennedy Swedick, demonstrated her exceptional talent by committing to the University of Virginia in January. Though she has yet to compete in her first event with the Cavaliers, Swedick continues to enhance her scholastic achievements.

Swedick participated in the 2023 New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s state tournament at the Edison Club in Rexford as the defending champion. She emerged victorious for the second time, as she was the only golfer out of the 111-player field to shoot below par. In the final round on June 5, the junior prodigy fired an impressive 3-under 69, completing 36 holes with a remarkable score of 5-under 139. Her performance surpassed the runner-up, Emma Lee, a sophomore from Scarsdale, by seven strokes.

Recognizing her exceptional accomplishments, Swedick has been rightfully honored as the Times Union’s Girls’ Athlete of the Week for the period of June 5-11.

Swedick’s success was not confined to her individual achievement, as her teammates, Samantha Von Rohr (sophomore), Nicole Criscone (senior), and Jillian Rawson (junior), contributed to their team’s triumph as well. They secured the state team title by finishing 21 strokes ahead of the 2022 champion, Ursuline.

Adding to her long list of accolades, Swedick has competed twice in the U.S. Girls’ Junior and qualified for the Junior PGA Championship four times. Her talent has also garnered her a sponsor’s exemption to the Epson Tour’s Twin Bridges Championship at Pinehaven. Last summer, she emerged as the victor in the State Women’s Am at McGregor Links in Wilton, which is the same venue where she claimed her first state title in 2022.

Entering the final round with a three-shot lead, Swedick displayed unwavering composure as she secured her victory without facing any significant challenges. Reflecting on her performance, the junior attributed her success to her altered mindset, emphasizing her focus on her routine and disregarding external distractions.

“I have adopted a different mindset,” Swedick explained. “I prioritize my routine and remain undistracted by external factors. By solely focusing on my swing and shot, rather than anything else happening around me, I have experienced significant improvement this year.”

In conclusion, Kennedy Swedick’s remarkable golfing abilities and impressive achievements have solidified her status as a rising star in the sport. As she looks forward to her future at the University of Virginia, her dedication and unwavering focus are sure to continue guiding her towards even greater success.
