GQ and Twitter Declare ‘The Idol’ Airs the Most Disastrous Sex Scene in History

HBO’s latest show, “The Idol,” faced criticism after airing its second episode on Sunday. The episode featured a sex scene between the main characters, Jocelyn and Tedros, that was described as cringy and laden with male-gaze absurdity. GQ even went so far as to call it the “worst sex scene in history.” The show, co-created by Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Sam Levinson, had already attracted controversy before its premiere. Anonymous sources from the cast and crew referred to it as a “toxic” man’s “rape fantasy.” These complaints seem to hold some truth, as Episode 2’s sex scene portrays Tedros whispering lackluster sexual commands to Jocelyn as he watches. The discomfort felt by viewers was intentional, according to Tesfaye, who plays the character of Tedros. He explained that the scene was meant to convey Tedros’ inadequacy and reveal his despicable nature as the show progresses. Despite the criticism, Tesfaye seems unfazed and stands behind the artistic choices made in the scene.
