A recent investigation suggests that three scientists from the Wuhan lab, who were involved in genetically modifying the Covid virus, were the first to contract the illness. The individuals identified as Ben Hu, Ping Yu, and Yan Zhu, were all working at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) and were suspected to have played a role in the lab leak that led to the pandemic. Their research focused on manipulating SARS-like coronaviruses to increase their infectiousness through a technique called gain-of-function research.
Shi Zhengli – dubbed the ‘Bat Lady’ of ‘Bat Woman’ for her work on bat coronaviruses – investigated the possibility Covid could have emerged from her lab back in 2020 according to colleagues. Here she is pictured working with other researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in 2017

Alina Chan, a molecular biologist at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and co-author of the book “Viral: The Search for the Origin of Covid-19” believes that Ben Hu is a key figure in this investigation. According to her, Hu was mentored by Shi Zhengli, also known as the “bat woman of China,” and was heavily involved in creating SARS-like viruses and testing their effects on humanized mice. Chan suggests that if anyone was at risk of being accidentally infected with Covid-19 due to their involvement in risky virus research, it would be Hu.
In fact, Shi Zhengli herself expressed concerns during the early stages of the pandemic that the virus could have originated from her lab. Colleague Wang Linfa described her fear and dedication in meticulously examining frozen virus samples at the WIV, searching for any connection to Covid-19.
Both Hu and Yu collaborated with Zhengli on a scientific paper in 2019 regarding the geographical distribution of bat SARS-related coronaviruses. This collaboration further supports the notion that these individuals were directly involved in the research activities of the Wuhan lab.
The possibility of Hu being the first known case of Covid-19 is considered a significant breakthrough in understanding the origins of the pandemic. It raises questions about the lab’s role and the potential cover-up by the Wuhan Institute of Virology, as alleged by anonymous US state department investigators and the previously undisclosed US intelligence report.
China’s refusal to provide raw data on early Covid-19 cases to the World Health Organization (WHO) has further complicated efforts to uncover the truth. However, President Biden has taken steps to demand transparency by signing a bill that calls for the release of information about the researchers who fell ill in the fall of 2019.
Considering the evidence and expert opinions, it becomes increasingly crucial to conduct a thorough investigation into the Wuhan lab and its activities. The discoveries made in relation to the first infected scientists could serve as a “smoking gun” in understanding the true origin of Covid-19.
