The eagerly awaited schematic design for the first phase of the Palm Springs campus of College of the Desert will be presented on Wednesday, a development that has sparked excitement throughout the region. The meeting to unveil the design will take place between 9am to noon in the multipurpose room of the Donald and Peggy Cravens Student Services Centre at the college’s Palm Desert Campus, which is open to the general public. This meeting, the Palm Springs Project Management Team, will also be streamed online via the college’s website and YouTube channel.
This campus, located at the site of the former Palm Springs mall, is expected to include a wide array of offerings, including an event center, a culinary institute, a mobility hub, a dinner restaurant, Hotel Villas, and more. The schematic design completion is being expedited by the project management team. The academic and student support spaces will be equipped with the latest technology, flexible workspaces, and gathering areas that encourage collaboration among faculty, staff, and students, according to college officials.
In February, the Desert Community College District Board of Trustees gave the green light for initial plans for the new campus. The board directed the staff to integrate adjustments into the final schematic design, and subsequently, move on to the final design and construction plans. Once approved by the Division of State Architect, the construction phase will begin shortly thereafter.
College officials stated, “The plans reflect the college’s vision and direction set in board approved strategic, education, and master facility plans—each developed with input and engagement from faculty, staff, and students, as well as community partners.”
Comments on the design can be submitted before the public comment period ends during the meeting. Attendees, whether virtual or in-person, will have a three-minute limit to speak.
