Puberty-Blocking Drugs Restricted to Research Purposes Only in Britain

The National Health Service in Britain announced a policy change on Friday that will restrict the use of puberty-suppressing drugs to children enrolled in clinical trials due to a lack of evidence supporting their safety or clinical effectiveness as routine treatment. This change is part of a broader movement in several countries to limit gender-related medical treatments for young people. Finland and Sweden have already initiated similar restrictions, while a Norwegian health body and the French National Academy of Medicine have urged caution. In the United States, over 20 Republican-led states have passed laws banning the use of puberty-blocking drugs and hormones. The Tavistock Gender Identity Development Service in Britain, the country’s only youth gender clinic, closed last year due to a sharp increase in referrals that made it unable to provide appropriate care. The clinic had tested the blockers on children with gender dysphoria, and findings showed a decrease in depression and anxiety. However, a British study revealed that blockers had no effect on psychological tests scores and sparked concerns over whether the drugs served their intended purpose of providing adolescents time to think. The National Health Service is now organizing a clinical trial for all children receiving puberty blockers as a way to obtain more data. Although the Tavistock clinic is closed, regional centers are opening across Britain to expand gender-related services for young people with more mental health support incorporated into the treatment plan. The National Health Service stated that the primary goal is to relieve distress associated with gender incongruence and promote the individuals’ global functioning and well-being.
