Veena Torchia’s life changed significantly when she turned 60 last year and moved with her husband to Pushkar, a city in northern India, to open the state’s first vegan cafe. As she sat in her garden eating a ripe mango, she realized that her senses had sharpened. She and her husband rented a bedroom in a hotel for £5 a night and opened the Arty Vegan cafe in the garden. Torchia’s clients include tourists, businesses, yoga retreats, and walk-in customers. They make homemade tofu, soya milk, and dishes based on okara on weekdays, and international dishes on weekends.
Torchia was born in South Africa and moved to London at the age of eight with her mother and sister. She experienced racism in school and struggled with anorexia and bulimia, but her husband’s unconditional love helped her recover. They traveled extensively for 25 years and had four daughters. But when they returned to England to spend time with Torchia’s mother, they became homeless. Torchia worked for Crisis, a homelessness charity.
Five years ago, Torchia was diagnosed with breast cancer, which she thought was the end of the world. But in Pushkar, she feels at home, shedding the traumas of the past and living for the moment. Their room is basic, but Torchia couldn’t be happier. She feels like she’s finally her own person. If you’re struggling with an eating disorder, helplines are available in the UK, US, and Australia.
