As a self-identified dog person, I often find myself drawn to the traits that I lack. I envy the self-sufficiency, transactional nature, fickleness, and aloofness that are stereotypically associated with cats. Conversely, those who prefer cats tend to be warm, friendly, and open with their love. However, my love for dogs has always been unwavering – from my first word being “woo-wah” to my consistent delight in pointing out every dog I see, dogs have been my first and most enjoyable love.
Unfortunately, as a renter who travels frequently for work and has no permanent partner, owning a dog has always been out of reach. But early this year, I had a sudden realization – it would be at least 10 years before I could realistically own a dog, but I could get a cat now. As someone who viewed cats as simply lower maintenance pets, I was surprised by how much joy and companionship a four-year-old Cornish rex named Vlada brought into my life.
Despite being a dog person, I was astonished by Vlada’s personality and the stability she brought into my life. She follows me from room to room, head-butts me to wake up in the morning, and sleeps beside me every night. Vlada may not love me like a dog would, but her steady love and companionship have been a revelation to me. I had been investing in an unattainable vision of happiness by dreaming of a dog in the future, but Vlada showed me that happiness can be found in the present.
As I continue to care for Vlada, I am reminded that love can come in many forms and that it’s better to embrace the love that’s present and steady rather than searching for something imagined or withheld. While a cat or a dog cannot replace people, they can certainly bring joy and companionship into our lives.
