Reviled office cubicles make a comeback with a twist, courtesy of Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook-owner Meta is introducing a new strategy to make video calls more productive for workers by bringing back office cubicles. Dubbed “The Cube” internally, these movable cubicles feature three soft screens made of felt-like recycled PET plastic enveloping a worker’s desk, blocking out noise and distractions. John Tenanes, Meta’s vice president of global real estate and facilities, acknowledged the growing need for a private space to videoconference amidst the pandemic. The soft material of “The Cube” absorbs sound instead of reflecting it back, reducing sound levels by around 20 decibels. This shift marks a departure from the collaborative open-plan office that has been increasingly popular in recent decades but often not conducive to productivity. The move also comes as businesses continue to navigate post-Covid remote and hybrid work scenarios.
