Tech leaders who advocate pausing AI development lack actual products

The CEO of Palantir, Alex Karp, is opposed to the idea of pausing artificial intelligence (AI) research, which some of the biggest names in the tech industry support. Karp believes that a pause in AI research on models larger than GPT-4, which powers tools such as ChatGPT, could lead to adversaries stealing a lead in both commercial and military applications. Speaking to BBC Radio, Karp stated that “many of the people asking for a pause, are asking for a pause because they have no product.” He also believes that studying AI and allowing other countries to win, especially on the battlefield, is a bad strategy. Karp points out that Palantir’s AI has given Ukrainian forces a technological edge over invading Russian forces. He believes that there is already an AI arms race, and slowing down research would not stop it. Instead, countries and private organizations should focus on staying ahead in the race by utilizing AI on the battlefield. The advent of AI-powered software on the battlefield is a significant event that throws down a gauntlet to every country worldwide.
