Monday marks Patroons’ attempt to halt Newfoundland’s journey.

The inaugural season of The Basketball League has taken the Newfoundland Rogues on quite the adventure throughout North America. However, the Albany Patroons are looking to end their journey on Monday night as they face off in the East Conference finals at the Washington Avenue Armory.

The Patroons hold a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series after a dominant 134-108 win in Game 1 in St. John’s. Head coach Derrick Rowland has his sights set on winning the next two games and securing their ultimate goal. The Patroons have a 24-4 record and have driven to every road game until now, while the Rogues boast a 26-18 record and have already played in North Carolina and Georgia in the postseason. Their regular season even took them to Oregon, Washington, Indiana, and Kentucky.

Newfoundland head coach Jerry Williams has had his fair share of travel woes, as getting on and off the island is no easy feat. Despite this, the Rogues are committed to joining the Basketball Super League next season, while the Patroons ownership remains undecided. Williams believes that the TBL offers a better market and level of basketball play than the American Basketball Association, where he won four championships with the Jacksonville Giants.

The Rogues heavily rely on their guards, particularly Armani Chaney, who led the team in Game 1 with 37 points and 8 assists. Although Williams doesn’t prefer the 3-point shooting style, he is working with the strengths of his guard-heavy roster. The Patroons, however, boast greater size and depth and expect to maintain their competitive edge in Game 2.

Overall, the East Conference finals should be an exciting matchup as both teams battle for a spot in the championship round. The game is set for 7 p.m. on Monday at the Washington Avenue Armory in Albany.
