Palliative Care: Joanne Porter’s Perspective on Maximizing Every Moment

Joanne Porter, the director of the Journeys Program in Palliative Care at the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital, has been chosen as a 2021 Woman of Excellence for a Distinguished Career by the Women’s Business Council of the Capital Region Chamber. Porter hopes that this recognition will help promote a better understanding of palliative care.

For the past 11 years, Porter has led the Journeys program, which caters to pediatric patients with life-threatening conditions. She believes that palliative care is not only about end-of-life care but also about creating meaningful moments for patients and their families. Porter and her team provide care for patients throughout their hospital and home care visits, ensuring that they receive the utmost attention and assistance.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Porter and her staff shifted their attention to treating COVID-19 patients, using their palliative care skills to help families understand and cope with a dire prognosis. Porter’s skilled staff is the common thread that runs throughout the patient’s care, providing continuity and support for the family.

Porter’s Catholic faith and her hobby of singing in her church choir also serve as a source of strength and inspiration, imbuing her work with joy and positivity. She strives to make a difference in every patient’s life, regardless of their age or condition, and believes that every moment counts. Through her efforts and dedication, Porter has earned her place amongst the Women of Excellence in the Capital Region Chamber.
