New Information Revealed by US on Military Drone Cooperation Between Russia and Iran

The White House has recently revealed further details about the deepening collaboration between Russia and Iran in the field of military drone production. The disclosure includes the supply route Tehran uses to send its unmanned aerial vehicles to the front lines in Ukraine, as well as details of a possible Russian production facility. The revelation forms part of a series of declassified intelligence releases outlining the military relationship between Moscow and Tehran. The disclosures come as Washington looks to add pressure to Russian President Vladimir Putin in relation to his involvement in Ukraine by starving him of military hardware. John Kirby, the US National Security Council spokesperson, stated that “The drones are built in Iran, shipped across the Caspian Sea…to Makhachkala, Russia, and then used operationally by Russian forces against Ukraine. We are also concerned that Russia is working with Iran to produce Iranian UAVs from inside Russia.” An image of Russia’s Alabuga special economic zone was also released, allegedly highlighting where Moscow was likely to produce Iranian drones. Iran’s General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper and Tayyareci ANKA drones were reportedly used by Russian forces in Ukraine. Iranian-made drones have been an important part of Russia’s air campaign against Ukraine. As of May 2021, Russia had received hundreds of one-way attack drones and drone production-related equipment from Iran. The US has previously released satellite imagery that it believed indicated Iran had sold hundreds of attack drones to Moscow. Tehran has denied involvement in providing drones to Russia for use in Ukraine or taking sides in the conflict.
