The City Council of Los Angeles has recently approved a significant motion that calls on its various departments to take the necessary measures to officially become a sanctuary city for immigrants. The motion has been previously approved by the council’s Civil Rights, Equity, Immigration, Aging and Disability Committee, and the Public Safety Committee. As per the motion, the city attorney must draft an ordinance in 60 days, prohibiting the utilization of any city resources, property, or personnel for any federal immigration enforcement. Furthermore, the motion will restrict the cooperation between the city and federal immigration authorities regarding their duties related to immigration enforcement.
The motion’s introduction was led by Councilwoman Nithya Raman, alongside council members Eunisses Hernandez and Hugo Soto-Martínez. Raman expressed her appreciation for the advocates, lawyers, and various organizations dedicated to educating and safeguarding immigrants’ rights. According to Raman, Los Angeles’ immigrant population constitutes millions of residents, and many school children have at least one immigrant parent. Regrettably, a considerable number of residents in Los Angeles reside in constant fear of being apprehended, detained, and deported by federal immigration authorities.
The city of Los Angeles has taken its first formal steps to safeguard its immigrant community from a Presidential administration that has sparked fear among people seeking a better life in the US. In 2019, Mayor Eric Garcetti issued an executive directive to offer protections to the immigrant community. However, it lacked the permanence of a city law.
In a 12-0 vote on Friday, the council supported the motion, creating an official ordinance codifying the existing protections outlined in the executive directive.
Councilman Soto-Martínez remarked that hateful rhetoric and harmful legislation in recent years have generated distrust between the immigrant community and the government. The motion is a clear message to the community that the city is not like them, and the city should be looked upon as an entity that can be trusted and relied on for help.
The motion also instructs the city’s various departments to report back to ensure that the city is on the right track to be an official sanctuary city and monitor its progress.
