With the help of AI technology, robots are now capable of performing eyelash extensions.

Ashley Davis has been getting eyelash extensions for eight years and has paid $150 every two weeks for the service. However, she recently tried a new way of doing it: with robots. LUUM, a beauty studio in Oakland, California, uses robots for applying false eyelash extensions using AI technology called computer vision. Customers are reporting that the robots are cheaper, quicker, and safer than traditional eyelash extensions performed by humans. LUUM’s CEO and co-founder, Nathan Harding, said that the robots do not completely replace eyelash artists, but can save their labor by allowing them to do three times the appointments in a day that they can do now. After videos of the robots went viral on TikTok, LUUM is now taking pre-orders to sell the machines for $60,000 to other studios, with Ulta Beauty one of its investors.

Although the use of robots has raised concerns about the safety and efficacy of robots performing such tasks and the consequences of putting humans out of work, the robots currently used are more basic and provide simple results. Kris Hauser, a computer science professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, also added that precision and repetition are the things that robots are really good at and that they can be helpful in tasks that require such skills. While the inclusion of robots in the beauty industry is exciting, lash association president Levi Shephard said that there is space for both humans and robots in the industry.
