A Glendale car owner reported a hate crime to the Glendale Police Department on Friday. The car was parked in the 600 block of East Lomita Avenue, near Glendale Avenue when it was scratched with words and phrases supporting the LGBTQ community, as well as a derogatory word aimed at individuals of Armenian descent. The owner contacted the police after discovering his vehicle had been keyed in multiple locations, including the passenger side, rear panel, roof, and hood. The words “IT’S OK TO BE QUEER,” “PRIDE,” “STOP HATING,” and “LBGTQ” were scratched into the paint along with the derogatory word.
Sgt. Victor Jackson, the public information officer, reported that the department’s Robbery/Homicide Unit immediately investigated the incident as a hate crime. The vehicle was taken into police custody for forensic testing. The Glendale community boasts one of the largest populations of individuals of Armenian descent.
This incident occurred three days following a melee outside the Glendale Unified School District headquarters, where a resolution to designate June as Pride Month was being considered. Glendale Police Chief Manuel Cid attributed the violence to “agitators on both sides of the issue,” relating to the question of whether children should be taught about sexual identities in school.
