9th Consecutive Month of Impressive Metro Ridership Growth: Explore the Phenomenon!

The ridership on Metro’s system experienced a significant growth of 13% in August compared to the same period last year, reaching over 25 million boardings, as announced by the transit agency on Friday.

The monthly bus and rail ridership of Metro has now reached 79% of its pre-pandemic levels in 2019. The average ridership is currently at 75% of the pre-pandemic levels, and the average weekend ridership stands at 75% and 79.5% for Saturdays and Sundays respectively.

In the month of August, there were a total of approximately 25,124,083 boardings on Metro. On weekdays, an average of 889,573 riders utilized the transit system, while weekend boardings averaged 663,475 on Saturdays and 502,501 on Sundays.

August marked the second full month of operation for the newly reconfigured A and E Lines, following the opening of the Regional Connector in June. This connector merged three of Metro’s legacy rail lines, namely the A (Blue), E (Expo), and L (Gold) Lines, into two.

The A Line serves customers traveling from Azusa to Long Beach, while the E Line serves customers traveling from East L.A. to Santa Monica. Additionally, the project also introduced three new stations in downtown L.A.

During the month of August, ridership on the A and E Lines witnessed a 28% increase on weekdays compared to the combined ridership of the A, E, and L lines in August 2022. Furthermore, ridership on weekends for those three lines experienced a growth of over 45% compared to the same period last year.

Since April, Metro has placed a strong emphasis on safety, which has resulted in a significant 54% decrease in crime across the entire system and subsequently an increase in ridership.

On the B (Red) and D (Purple) Lines, ridership in August increased by 5% on both weekdays and weekends. Additionally, compared to August 2022, the weekends saw a 4% rise in ridership. These two lines observed an average of 74,157 trips during weekdays and an average of 65,011 trips during weekends.

Metro attributes part of its ridership increase to special events such as Taylor Swift’s Eras Concerts and the Hard Summer Music Festival. Swift fans were able to conveniently use the K and C Lines, which provided direct service to Sofi Stadium. Attendees of the Hard Summer Music Festival relied on Metro’s B, D, and E Lines for transportation to the event.

Bus ridership saw a year-over-year increase of 12% in August, according to Metro. Over 19.5 million riders utilized Metro’s buses, resulting in a total bus ridership that stands at 79% of its pre-pandemic levels.
