The Rabbit Fire in Lakeview has been reported as 98% contained by the Riverside County Fire Department on Saturday.
This update to the containment figure was announced at 7 p.m. on Friday, following the increase from 90% to 95% at 7:23 a.m. on the same day.
Despite excessive heat conditions, firefighters persistently worked on Friday to complete containment lines and conduct suppression repairs.
Overnight, firefighters will continue to patrol for hot spots and pockets burning within the burned area, ensuring maximum safety.
The department expects to achieve full containment by Sunday.
Evacuation warnings were all lifted as of noon on Wednesday, signifying significant progress.
Since Monday night, the fire has burned a total of 8,283 acres, maintaining the same figure as the update from 7,950 acres.
Originating around 3:30 p.m. on July 14, northeast of Gilman Springs Road and Jack Rabbit trail, the fire posed a threat to 152 structures, although none were ultimately destroyed or damaged.
Cal Fire Riverside mobilized 184 fire engines, 20 water tenders, seven helicopters, and 30 hand crews, totaling 1,578 personnel, in their dedicated firefighting efforts. Additional air tankers were dispatched from various locations within the state.
While one civilian sustained an injury, no specific details regarding the individual or the severity of the injury have been provided.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Rabbit Fire was the most extensive among four brush fires that occurred on July 14 and 15 in Riverside County. The other three fires have reached full or near-full containment as of Tuesday.
