787 Fresh Cases of COVID-19 and 8 Additional Deaths Recorded in Hawaii

The Hawaii Department of Health has stated that in the past week, there have been 787 new cases of COVID-19, taking the overall total for the state since the start of the pandemic to 387,419. In addition, eight more deaths have been reported, which brings the total of fatalities to 1,892. However, good news comes with the state’s seven-day average of new cases, which has decreased to 107 cases per day, compared to 114 on April 26. The average positivity rate currently stands at 8.0%, which is similar to the figure reported on April 26 at 7.9%.

Note that the seven-day average is based on data from April 22 to April 28, unlike the week-over-week counts from April 25 to May 1. This is because cases from the most recent three days may not be reported as yet. The figures do not include results from home test kits, which could mean that the actual numbers are higher.

The estimated number of cases per 100,000 people in Hawaii is 7.6, lower than the previous week’s figure of 8.1. However, epidemiologists are keeping an eye on the omicron sub-variant XBB.1.16, known as “Arcturus,” due to its growth advantage and growing presence worldwide. Wastewater samples and test specimens in Hawaii have tested positive for Arcturus.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has reported cases of the Arcturus strain and alerted residents to conjunctivitis or pink eye as a possible new symptom of COVID-19. It is too early to determine with certainty if conjunctivitis is linked to Arcturus because of limited data. The weekly average of COVID-19 patients in hospitals is at 59 per day, down from 68 per day the previous week, according to Healthcare Association of Hawaii data.

582 new cases were reported on Oahu, 97 on Hawaii’s Big Island, 52 on Maui, 38 on Kauai, and three on Molokai. There were also 15 infections reported for Hawaii residents out-of-state. Roughly 27.6% of the state’s eligible population have received the updated bivalent booster, and seniors aged 65 or older and those who are immunocompromised are now eligible for a second bivalent booster.
