5 States Hosting Fishing and Outdoor Recreation Events for Father’s Day

This year, Father’s Day and National Go Fishing Day coincide on Sunday, June 18th. For dads and families interested in fishing or outdoor activities who haven’t made it a priority, there are free or discounted events and programs available at local parks. These outdoor recreation destinations are offering unique ways to celebrate Father’s Day. Some state wildlife agencies are hosting free fishing day events over Father’s Day weekend and National Go Fishing Day.

Here are four states hosting free fishing days during the holiday weekend, along with one state offering a non-fishing event for adventurers everywhere. If you’re looking for a Father’s Day outing idea, why not try fishing or spending a day in the great outdoors? Take inspiration from these five states hosting unique events for aspiring anglers and hikers.

Illinois: Free fishing during Father’s Day weekend
The state of Illinois is holding its annual “Free Fishing Days” during Father’s Day weekend, allowing dads and families to fish without a license or stamp. The program will run from Friday, June 16th, to Sunday, June 18th, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). Normally, Illinois residents would need a fishing license or stamp to fish in the state, but during the four-day “Free Fishing Days” event, no license is required.

Different recreation spots in Illinois will be hosting special events for Father’s Day. For example, the Monee Reservoir Visitor Center in Will County will offer dads a free container of bait and a small gift, as well as free fishing pole rentals for reservoir visitors between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Montana: License-free fishing for dads and families
In honor of Father’s Day, fishing will be free for all Montana residents from Saturday, June 17th, to Sunday, June 18th. The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (MFWP) department has announced that “all would-be anglers” can fish without a license over Father’s Day weekend. However, they will need to comply with Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) inspection stations if they’re fishing from a family-owned watercraft. All other fishing rules and regulations must be followed.

Ohio: License-free fishing in time for Father’s Day
Once again, the state of Ohio is bringing back its annual two-day “Free Fishing Days” event just in time for Father’s Day weekend. Ohio residents will be able to fish without a license on Saturday, June 17th, and Sunday, June 18th, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). However, all size and bag limits still apply during these two days.

South Dakota: Free entry into state parks and license-free fishing for Father’s Day
Residents of South Dakota can enjoy free entry into state parks and fish without a license on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 18th. The South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks (SDGFP) has announced that there will be no fishing license required. However, fishing regulations and limits still apply. The SDGFP will also provide free fishing poles and bait to Father’s Day celebrants who visit Palisades State Park in Minnehaha County. Limited quantities will be available.

North Dakota: Free ‘Father’s Day Hike’ at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park
Dads and families in North Dakota have the opportunity to participate in a free “Father’s Day Hike” event at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park. This event, organized by the North Dakota Parks & Recreation, combines a scavenger hunt with a hike. The Father’s Day Hike will take place on Sunday, June 18th, at 10 a.m. Participants will search for hidden treasures based on clues provided during the event. Those who complete the hike and return a scavenged gold coin to the park’s commissary will qualify for a 10% discount on soft drink purchases at the Coffee Bar (excluding bottled drinks). Please note that a vehicle permit is required for entry to Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park.

Enjoy these unique Father’s Day events and make the most of the holiday weekend with your loved ones!
