SANTA CLARA — The 49ers received a promising sign as quarterback Brock Purdy participated in individual work during practice, indicating progress in his recovery from a concussion.
This development suggests that Purdy is on track to play in the upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.
According to Coach Kyle Shanahan, Purdy had sufficient time to be cleared for Sunday’s game. If he is unable to play, backup Sam Darnold would start in his place.
Purdy first displayed concussion symptoms on Monday’s flight back to the Bay Area from Minnesota.
Under the NFL’s return-to-play protocol, Purdy seems to have reached the fourth phase which involves participating in non-contact training drills, including throwing passes.
During practice, Purdy was observed rolling out and throwing passes, indicating a potential full clearance by Friday or Saturday.
Purdy likely sustained the concussion during a quarterback sneak attempt in the fourth quarter of Monday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. The hit by linebacker Jordan Hicks was deemed helmet-to-helmet and may result in a fine.
Following the hit, Purdy threw a critical interception, and later threw his second interception, securing a victory for the Vikings.
