49ers GM John Lynch Indicates Trey Lance Is Expected to Stay with the Team

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Trey Lance, the highly anticipated rookie quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, returned to the team facility on Thursday after losing out on the backup quarterback job. The team’s general manager, John Lynch, addressed the situation in an interview with KNBR radio, stating that while the team is considering all options, there is a strong chance Lance will remain with the team as its third quarterback for the upcoming season.

Lynch stated, “That’s the most likely option. We’re very happy with Trey. If we can find a landing spot for Trey that is a really good one for him and works for our organization, that’s not something that we’d turn a blind eye to. But that’s not where our focus is right now. Our focus is on Trey getting back here and us being the best football team.”

The news of Lance’s backup status came as a disappointment to the rookie quarterback, who was excused from Wednesday’s practice to process the situation. Lynch praised Lance for his professionalism and competitive spirit, stating that he handled the news “incredibly well, with class.”

Despite the setback, Lance is expected to play in the team’s exhibition finale against the Los Angeles Chargers, providing him with another opportunity to showcase his skills to potential trade partners. While trade rumors have surrounded Lance throughout the offseason, Lynch denied actively shopping him and emphasized that the team’s priority is to build a strong roster.

If the Niners were to trade Lance, they would incur a dead money charge but also save cap space in the coming seasons. However, given the team’s history of quarterback injuries, Lynch expressed the likelihood of keeping three quarterbacks on the roster. He stated, “Barring a worthwhile trade offer, this could make Lance more valuable to San Francisco, even as a No. 3 quarterback, than acquiring a future late-round pick would be.”

In addition to Lance’s situation, Lynch addressed the ongoing holdout of star defensive end Nick Bosa. While expressing his disapproval of the holdout, Lynch assured fans that the team is working to resolve the contract situation and acknowledged Bosa’s value as a player.
