40-year-old Broadway actor Chris Peluso, known for his role in ‘Mamma Mia!’, passes away

Chris Peluso, a talented stage actor known for his performances in Broadway’s “Mamma Mia!” and “Wicked,” as well as “Miss Saigon” in London’s West End, tragically passed away this week at the age of 40.

A year ago, it was publicly announced that Chris Peluso had taken a hiatus from his acting career to seek treatment for schizoaffective disorder. While his family confirmed his death to Playbill this week, they did not disclose the cause.

The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, where Peluso studied before embarking on his successful stage career, also confirmed the news of his passing.

In a heartfelt statement posted on Instagram, Linda Goodrich, the interim chair of the department, expressed the profound sadness felt by the Michigan Musical Theatre family, remembering Chris Peluso as a beloved alumnus who was not only talented but also charismatic and divine. She extended her sympathies to his family during this difficult time.

Peluso made his Broadway debut as an understudy in the 2004 Tony-winning revival of “Assassins.” Throughout his career, he garnered respect as a skilled understudy in musicals such as “Lestat” and the original cast of “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” He then went on to take on leading roles, including the character of Sky in the 14-year run of “Mamma Mia!” and Fiyero in the U.S. tour of “Wicked.” He also showcased his talent in Broadway classics like “Les Miserables” and “West Side Story.”

In 2015, Peluso relocated to London to star as the male lead Chris in the West End production of “Miss Saigon.” His co-star, Eva Noblezada, who played Kim, later reprised her role in the Broadway revival and received a Tony nomination. Peluso considered his role in “Miss Saigon” to be the highlight of his career.

In various interviews, Peluso spoke passionately about his life in London, particularly praising the city’s cuisine. He enjoyed spending his free time taking walks with his dog. He also appreciated the tradition of doing physical and vocal warmups with the entire acting company before performances, a custom that he found lacking in the U.S. Broadway scene. With his extensive experience, Peluso had become confident and comfortable performing on stage, feeling energized by the audience’s presence.

The following year, Peluso garnered acclaim for his performance in the 2016 West End revival of “Show Boat.” This musical held a special place in his heart, especially the song “Ol’ Man River,” which deeply moved him when he first heard it as a young actor.

According to Today, Peluso is survived by his wife, Jessica Gomes, and their two children, Aria Li Gomes-Peluso and Caio Lian Gomes-Peluso.
