34-Year-Old Man Found Guilty of Fatally Shooting Individual near Indio Last Year

A man has been found guilty of murder in the fatal shooting of another man in a Riverside County area near Indio. Ruben Corria Esquivel Jr., a 34-year-old resident of Coachella, was also convicted of being a felon and a narcotic addict in possession of a firearm. Jurors also confirmed that he had discharged a firearm causing great bodily injury.

The charges relate to the killing of Vincent “Chente” Aispuro on February 21, 2020, on Van Buren Street. The jury took less than a day to reach their verdict. A sentencing date will be set on Monday, including a trial date for a prior strike.

During the trial, it was revealed that Esquivel and Martha Perez Espinoza had gone to the victim’s residence, a drug house, but were asked to leave. In response, Esquivel immediately pulled out a gun from his waistband and shot Aispuro in the chest, resulting in his death. Deputy District Attorney Samantha Paixao argued that the shooting occurred because Esquivel didn’t like being disrespected.

Initially, another man named Rodolfo Diaz was identified as the suspect by a witness, but further investigation showed no connection between him and the murder. Defense attorney Shaun Sullivan argued that the shooting took place in an area with unreliable witnesses who would testify against his client.

After a few months of investigation, the witness who had initially identified Diaz admitted to law enforcement that Esquivel was the actual perpetrator. Esquivel was arrested in July 2020 after surrendering following a standoff with sheriff’s deputies.

According to court records, Esquivel has previous felony convictions in Riverside County, including attempted carjacking and parole violations. Espinoza, on the other hand, pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact and received a jail sentence and mandatory supervision.
