Dozens of protesters were detained during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York after they used super glue to fasten themselves to the pavement in an act of protest, while others spray-painted “Free Palestine” on the pillars of the New York Public Library’s main building. These arrests stemmed from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza during the parade on Thursday. Authorities arrested 34 demonstrators who caused interruptions along the parade route, with some protesters even leapfrogging barricades to block Sixth Avenue and glue themselves to the ground. Clad in white jumpsuits splattered with artificial blood and bearing messages of “colonialism” and “consumerism,” a group of demonstrators brandished Palestinian flags and banners with provocative phrases.
Thirty protesters received citations for trespassing, while four individuals, recognized as Jay Waxse, Natalia Scollo, Sarah Al Azzawi, and Alvin Dan, faced criminal charges involving the vandalism of the New York Public Library. The library spokesperson stated that while they support the right to protest, this act of vandalism would result in costly repairs, challenging their already diminished budget.
The parade disturbance links to global events, as a cease-fire in Gaza was underway between Israel and Hamas, resulting in the release of Israeli and Thai captives. Much like other parts of the United States, pro-Palestinian demonstrations have resulted in arrests, including earlier incidents at the offices of U.S. senators and a congressional hearing.
The Thanksgiving incident, which began around 10 a.m., resulted in the diversion of floats and balloons while protesters ignored demands to vacate the area. Despite being taken into custody, their impact continued with spray paint and pretend blood on the New York Public Library’s main building. An array of additional protests and support for Palestine emerged throughout the day, including an individual holding a Palestinian flag on a parade float.
